For over 30 years, The Greenbrier resort kept a huge secret hidden underground. To the public it was known as the West Virginia wing, to the US government, it was known as the Congressional Relocation Facility. The "Bunker" was designed to house the United States Congress in the event of a nuclear attack. In 1992, the secret was revealed by Ted Gup, in an article in The Washington Post.
During the 30 years that the bunker was a secret, groups were meeting there and enjoying theme parties and dinners, without realizing they were in a top-secret government facility. Public tours are now available after the Greenbrier has renovated much of the facility. This trip to Greenbrier County will give you a real feel for the government's fears during the Cold War.
At the Greenbrier, we’ll have lunch, take a tour, and...see this underground bunker that looks like it came right out of Dr. Strangelove.
You can walk through the steel vault doors. You can see the advanced communication room used to monitor every nook and cranny of the place. You can marvel at the probe designed to monitor the outside air after a nuclear attack. Tour the meeting room designed to hold the whole House of Representatives. The leisurely- paced guided walking tour is 90-minutes with a break half-way through.
Just one question might nag the conspiracy theorists though. If this bunker is open to the public, where's the real one now? Hmmmm....
The Greenbrier itself is an award-winning resort. As a National Historic landmark, The Greenbrier's classic architecture, exquisite interior design, carefully sculpted landscape, impeccable service and outstanding amenities have hosted distinguished guests from around the world since 1778.
